About the S14

The S14 Silvia went on sale in October 1993 and was replaced in January 1999. A 1996 minor change, known as the kouki, brought sharper headlamps. The K’s has the SR20DET turbo four with 220 PS; the J’s and Q’s use the 160 PS SR20DE.

It has a wider, stiffer chassis than the S13 and is still a mainstay of drifting. Two rare factory specials exist: the Autech K’s MF-T and the NISMO 270R, of which 30 were made.

Nissan built the S14 to carry on the concept of the hugely successful S13, but moved it up to the wider 3-number size class for better performance. A 1,500-car Q's Aero Sports limited model followed in February 1994. On track the S14 ran in the JGTC GT300 class, and in 1997 the car of Manabu Orido and Hideo Fukuyama won the team title.

Can an S14 come in?

Both countries count from the month on the build plate, so a car can become eligible part-way through a year. We check the plate on every car.

Quebec registers right-hand-drive cars only at 25 years. Every other province follows the federal 15-year rule.

US sourcing is planned for 2027, once a customs broker confirms the duty rate on Japanese classics. Enquiries are welcome now.

What to look at on an S14

The model-specific weak points we look for in the auction sheet, the photos and the scan.

  • Cam wear

Skipped oil changes wear the cams. Ask for service records.

  • Start-up rattle

Listen for a rattle from the variable valve timing on a cold start.

  • Gearbox

Feel for synchro crunch, especially on fast shifts.

  • Turbo leaks

Check the turbo gaskets and manifold for leaks.

  • Rust and damage

Look for rust in the arches, sills and floor, and for undeclared crash damage or modifications.

Quality control

What we check on every S14

  • The auction sheet, in full

Every line of the original Japanese sheet translated: repair marks, rust notes, interior score.

  • The build plate

The month of manufacture decides eligibility, so we read it off the car, not the registration.

  • Mileage against the records

Dash and ECU against the auction sheet and Japan's inspection history.

  • Flood and accident history

Checked before export, while a claim is still possible.

  • A full diagnostic scan

Every module read inside the auction's 5-day claim window, so a hidden fault goes back to the seller.

  • Underneath

Chassis rails, floors and suspension, where snow-country salt does its damage.

Questions

S14 buyer questions

Is the S14 eligible for import?

Yes. Carsensor gives S14 production as October 1993 to December 1998, so every car has passed the US 25-year rule and Canada's 15-year rule. Both count from the build month on the plate.

Zenki or kouki?

The June 1996 facelift (kouki) brought thin projector headlamps and a sharper front bumper. Carsensor's average asking prices are close: about ¥3.31 million for 1993–95 cars and ¥2.91 million for kouki cars. Choose on condition and history.

Which S14 is the turbo?

The K's has the 220 PS SR20DET turbo; J's and Q's are naturally aspirated. Turbo variants include the K's Aero, the K's with Super HICAS rear steer and the Autech K's MF-T, rated at 250 PS.
