About the R32

The R32 brought back the GT-R name and won in Group A touring car racing, which earned it the “Godzilla” nickname. Nissan sold it from August 1989 to January 1995, and about 43,900 were built.

It uses the RB26DETT 2.6 L twin-turbo inline-six, rated at 280 PS at 6,800 rpm, with ATTESA E-TS all-wheel drive and Super HICAS four-wheel steering. It is the cheapest way into an RB26 GT-R, and Hagerty UK reports buyer interest up 37% over the past year.

Nissan developed the BNR32 from the start to win Group A racing, and it did. In the All Japan Touring Car Championship it won all 29 races it entered, from its 1990 debut to the last Group A round at Inter TEC in 1993. Abroad it won the Spa 24 Hours outright in 1991, won the Bathurst 1000 in 1991 and 1992, and took the Australian Touring Car Championship in both years.

Eligibility

Can an R32 come in?

Both countries count from the month on the build plate, so a car can become eligible part-way through a year. We check the plate on every car.

Quebec registers right-hand-drive cars only at 25 years. Every other province follows the federal 15-year rule.

US sourcing is planned for 2027, once a customs broker confirms the duty rate on Japanese classics. Enquiries are welcome now.

Buying one

What to look at on an R32

The model-specific weak points we look for in the auction sheet, the photos and the scan.

  • Oil-pump drive

Early cranks have a narrow oil-pump collar that can fail at sustained high revs. A later build date does not guarantee the fix.

  • Turbos

The ceramic turbine wheels can shed, especially at raised boost. Ask what boost the car has run.

  • Rust

Check strut towers, rear arches, under the rear window, sills, jacking points and boot floor. Cars from northern Japan are usually worst.

  • Drivetrain

Test that ATTESA all-wheel drive and Super HICAS work, and confirm the BNR32 chassis code. An RB26 swap does not make a GT-R.

  • Timing belt

The RB26 is an interference engine. The belt is due about every 100,000 km or five years; check the coil packs too.

Quality control

What we check on every R32

  • The auction sheet, in full

Every line of the original Japanese sheet translated: repair marks, rust notes, interior score.

  • The build plate

The month of manufacture decides eligibility, so we read it off the car, not the registration.

  • Mileage against the records

Dash and ECU against the auction sheet and Japan's inspection history.

  • Flood and accident history

Checked before export, while a claim is still possible.

  • A full diagnostic scan

Every module read inside the auction's 5-day claim window, so a hidden fault goes back to the seller.

  • Underneath

Chassis rails, floors and suspension, where snow-country salt does its damage.

Questions

R32 buyer questions

Can I import an R32 GT-R to Canada or the US now?

Yes. Carsensor lists R32 GT-R production from August 1989 to December 1994, so every car is more than 25 years old. That clears both Canada's 15-year rule and the US 25-year rule, which count from the build month on the plate.

Which R32 GT-R grade should I look for?

The standard car suits most buyers. The V-Spec, added in February 1993, brought Brembo brakes and BBS wheels, and the V-Spec II followed. They carried the highest new prices, ¥5.26–5.29 million before tax. N1 cars are stripped homologation specials, so ask for paperwork before paying extra.

What does an R32 GT-R cost in Japan now?

Carsensor's average asking price for the generation was about ¥9.2 million in October 2026. Listings ran from about ¥8.2 million for a 175,000 km car to ¥15.1 million for a 49,000 km V-Spec II. Shipping, duty and compliance costs come on top.
