About the JZX90

The X90 Mark II launched in October 1992, and production ended in August 1996. The Tourer V uses the 1JZ-GTE 2.5 L twin-turbo inline-six with rear-wheel drive, in a four-door sedan body. Chaser and Cresta sister cars were sold alongside it, and no JZX90 was exported.

It is a staple of drifting and tandem drifting, and it costs less than a Supra for an engine from the same family.

The X90 Mark II became a Japan-only car, and every version used the wider “3-number” body, 1,750 mm across. Even so, it weighed up to about 100 kg less than the car it replaced. A manual gearbox was offered only on the Tourer V and the 1G-FE Grande. A September 1994 minor change brought new bumpers and lights, a driver airbag became standard in September 1995, and production ended in August 1996.

Can a JZX90 come in?

Both countries count from the month on the build plate, so a car can become eligible part-way through a year. We check the plate on every car.

Quebec registers right-hand-drive cars only at 25 years. Every other province follows the federal 15-year rule.

What to look at on a JZX90

The model-specific weak points we look for in the auction sheet, the photos and the scan.

  • Drift abuse

Look for chassis damage, kinked rails and welded diffs.

  • Gearbox and clutch

Worth checking the R154 synchros and the clutch.

  • Turbos

Worth checking the ceramic turbine wheels on the twin turbos, especially on raised boost.

  • Rust

Worth checking under the rear seat and the boot floor.

  • Manual conversion

Many cars were converted from automatic. Check the model code and gearbox grade code.

Quality control

What we check on every JZX90

  • The auction sheet, in full

Every line of the original Japanese sheet translated: repair marks, rust notes, interior score.

  • The build plate

The month of manufacture decides eligibility, so we read it off the car, not the registration.

  • Mileage against the records

Dash and ECU against the auction sheet and Japan's inspection history.

  • Flood and accident history

Checked before export, while a claim is still possible.

  • A full diagnostic scan

Every module read inside the auction's 5-day claim window, so a hidden fault goes back to the seller.

  • Underneath

Chassis rails, floors and suspension, where snow-country salt does its damage.

What landing one costs: see the worked examples; an enquiry gets you the figure for this car. New to auction sheets? Read how to read one.

Questions

JZX90 buyer questions

Is the JZX90 Tourer V eligible in the US and Canada?

Yes. Production ran from October 1992 to August 1996, so every car is more than 25 years old and clears the US rule, and all of them clear Canada’s 15-year rule.

Is a manual Tourer V hard to find?

Manuals are the ones buyers want, and many automatics have been converted. Toyota offered the manual only on the Tourer V and the Grande in this generation. Confirm the gearbox from the model and grade codes before paying a manual price.

How can I tell an early car from a facelift?

The September 1994 minor change revised the front bumper, corner lenses and tail lights. Cars from September 1995 also have a driver airbag as standard. The build date on the plate confirms which version you are looking at.
