About the R34

The R34 is the last GT-R built around the RB26DETT, rated at 280 PS, with ATTESA E-TS all-wheel drive and a Getrag six-speed. Production ran from January 1999 to August 2002, with roughly 11,600 to 12,300 built depending on the source.

Gran Turismo and the Fast & Furious films made it the most valuable car on this list, and values have jumped since US eligibility opened in 2024. The 2002 V-Spec II Nür and M-Spec Nür were limited to 1,000 cars combined.

Carsensor calls the R34 the finished form of the second-generation GT-R, and Nissan kept refining it. In January 2000 it offered a special paint, Midnight Purple III, for a limited period. The V-Spec II of August 2000 brought the first carbon-fibre bonnet on a mass-production car. New prices before tax ran from ¥4.998 million for the 1999 standard car to ¥6.3 million for the M-Spec Nür, the most expensive grade.

Can an R34 come in?

Both countries count from the month on the build plate, so a car can become eligible part-way through a year. We check the plate on every car.

Canada15-year rule · #3 in our top 25
Every year eligible now

Quebec registers right-hand-drive cars only at 25 years. Every other province follows the federal 15-year rule.

United States25-year rule · #3 in our top 25
Built up to Oct 2001: eligible now. Later builds roll in through 2027

US sourcing is planned for 2027, once a customs broker confirms the duty rate on Japanese classics. Enquiries are welcome now.

What to look at on an R34

The model-specific weak points we look for in the auction sheet, the photos and the scan.

  • Gearbox

First gear popping out of the six-speed is a known issue. Check it on the test drive.

  • Mileage

Replacement instrument clusters make mileage hard to verify, and some cars are rebuilt. Ask for the full history.

  • Variant claims

Require paperwork for any Nür, M-Spec or Z-tune claim before paying the premium.

  • Chassis plate

Worth checking that the BNR34 chassis and engine numbers match the claimed variant.

  • Build month

For a US import, the build month on the plate decides eligibility, not the model year.

Quality control

What we check on every R34

  • The auction sheet, in full

Every line of the original Japanese sheet translated: repair marks, rust notes, interior score.

  • The build plate

The month of manufacture decides eligibility, so we read it off the car, not the registration.

  • Mileage against the records

Dash and ECU against the auction sheet and Japan's inspection history.

  • Flood and accident history

Checked before export, while a claim is still possible.

  • A full diagnostic scan

Every module read inside the auction's 5-day claim window, so a hidden fault goes back to the seller.

  • Underneath

Chassis rails, floors and suspension, where snow-country salt does its damage.

Questions

R34 buyer questions

Can my R34 GT-R go to the US yet?

It depends on the build month. Production ran from January 1999 to August 2002, and the US rule counts 25 years from the plate. As of October 2026, cars built up to October 2001 qualify; later cars qualify month by month to August 2027. Canada accepts every build.

Which R34 grade holds its value best?

Carsensor's averages rise with later builds: about ¥31 million for 1999 cars against about ¥42.8 million for August 2000–August 2002 cars, which include the V-Spec II, M-Spec and Nür. Paperwork proving the grade matters as much as condition.

What does an R34 GT-R cost in Japan?

Carsensor's average asking price was about ¥34 million in October 2026. Sample listings included a 137,000 km V-Spec at about ¥22.2 million and a 50,000 km V-Spec II at about ¥32.4 million. Shipping, duty and compliance are extra.
