About the JZA80

The A80 Supra launched in May 1993. Production ended in July 2002 because the car could not meet new emissions rules, and 31,372 were sold. The RZ uses the 2JZ-GTE 3.0 L sequential twin-turbo inline-six, rated at 280 PS, with a Getrag six-speed manual.

That engine and gearbox pairing made it the archetypal tuning platform. The 2JZ-GTE gained VVT-i in August 1997. Hagerty reports Mk IV Turbo values have more than doubled since 2018, though they have eased from their peak.

The A80 design was approved at Toyota Technical Centre Aichi in mid-1990 and frozen for production late that year. Twenty pre-production test cars were built from December 1992, and mass production began in April 1993. The car reused subframe, suspension and drivetrain assemblies from the Z30 Soarer. Its brakes were a strong point: Car and Driver recorded a 70–0 mph stop of 149 ft for the Supra Turbo, the best of any production car it tested in 1997.

Eligibility

Can a JZA80 come in?

Both countries count from the month on the build plate, so a car can become eligible part-way through a year. We check the plate on every car.

Canada15-year rule · #8 in our top 25
Every year eligible now

Quebec registers right-hand-drive cars only at 25 years. Every other province follows the federal 15-year rule.

United States25-year rule · #8 in our top 25
Built up to Oct 2001: eligible now. Later builds roll in through 2027

US sourcing is planned for 2027, once a customs broker confirms the duty rate on Japanese classics. Enquiries are welcome now.

Buying one

What to look at on a JZA80

The model-specific weak points we look for in the auction sheet, the photos and the scan.

  • Six-speed gearbox

Worth checking the Getrag synchros on an RZ; the gearbox is expensive to replace.

  • Second turbo

If the second turbo does not come in, worth checking the vacuum hoses and control solenoids first.

  • Modifications

Check the auction sheet for a modified grade, and ask whether the original ECU comes with the car.

  • Factory six-speed

Automatics far outnumber manuals. Confirm a six-speed is factory from the chassis plate or model code.

  • Rust

Worth checking around the targa seals and the rear hatch.

Quality control

What we check on every JZA80

  • The auction sheet, in full

Every line of the original Japanese sheet translated: repair marks, rust notes, interior score.

  • The build plate

The month of manufacture decides eligibility, so we read it off the car, not the registration.

  • Mileage against the records

Dash and ECU against the auction sheet and Japan's inspection history.

  • Flood and accident history

Checked before export, while a claim is still possible.

  • A full diagnostic scan

Every module read inside the auction's 5-day claim window, so a hidden fault goes back to the seller.

  • Underneath

Chassis rails, floors and suspension, where snow-country salt does its damage.

Questions

JZA80 buyer questions

Can I import a JZA80 Supra RZ to the US now?

Most of them. The US 25-year rule counts from the build month, so cars built before about October 2001 qualify now. Production ran to mid-2002, so the last RZs become eligible during 2027. In Canada, every JZA80 already clears the 15-year rule.

Should I buy an early RZ or a post-1997 car?

From August 1997 the 2JZ-GTE gained VVT-i and torque rose from 44.0 to 46.0 kgm, according to Toyota’s catalogue. Later cars are also rarer. Early cars are lighter in price, so condition and originality should decide it more than the model year.

Are parts easy to find in North America?

Easier than for most JDM cars, because the A80 Supra Turbo was sold new in the US until export ended in 1999. Engine and many chassis parts are shared. Japan-only trim, right-hand-drive interior parts and some RZ-specific pieces still come from Japan.
