About the FD2

The FD2 Civic Type R went on sale in Japan on 30 March 2007, and production ended in August 2010. It is a four-door sedan with the K20A 2.0 L four, rated at 225 PS at 8,000 rpm, a six-speed manual, a helical limited-slip differential and Brembo front calipers.

It was never sold in North America and will not be US-eligible until about 2032, which makes it the clearest Canada-only performance car. The Mugen RR is the rare top version.

The FD2 moved the Type R into a four-door sedan, which made it easier to live with, yet Honda removed the balancer shaft and raised compression to 11.5. Japanese Wikipedia says about 2,100 orders arrived in the first month. Mugen’s 2007 Mugen RR, rated at 240 PS and 1,255 kg, was limited to 300 cars that sold out in ten minutes. The FD2 was also the base car for Honda’s 2008 one-make race.

Eligibility

Can an FD2 come in?

Both countries count from the month on the build plate, so a car can become eligible part-way through a year. We check the plate on every car.

Canada15-year rule · #14 in our top 25
Every year eligible now

Quebec registers right-hand-drive cars only at 25 years. Every other province follows the federal 15-year rule.

US sourcing is planned for 2027, once a customs broker confirms the duty rate on Japanese classics. Enquiries are welcome now.

What to look at on an FD2

The model-specific weak points we look for in the auction sheet, the photos and the scan.

  • Type code

Check the ABA-FD2 type code, K20A engine, six-speed, Brembos and Type R seats together.

  • Registration

Confirm the car is road-registered. The race-base version cannot be registered in Japan.

  • Ride

The ride is very stiff. Drive one before you commit.

  • No spare

There is no spare tire, only a repair kit.

  • Synchros and rust

Worth checking the gearbox synchros and the rear arches.

Quality control

What we check on every FD2

  • The auction sheet, in full

Every line of the original Japanese sheet translated: repair marks, rust notes, interior score.

  • The build plate

The month of manufacture decides eligibility, so we read it off the car, not the registration.

  • Mileage against the records

Dash and ECU against the auction sheet and Japan's inspection history.

  • Flood and accident history

Checked before export, while a claim is still possible.

  • A full diagnostic scan

Every module read inside the auction's 5-day claim window, so a hidden fault goes back to the seller.

  • Underneath

Chassis rails, floors and suspension, where snow-country salt does its damage.

What landing one costs: see the worked examples; an enquiry gets you the figure for this car. New to auction sheets? Read how to read one.

Questions

FD2 buyer questions

Is the FD2 legal to import?

In Canada, yes: production ended in August 2010, so every car is past the 15-year rule. In the US it is not eligible until the earliest 2007 builds turn 25, around 2032, with the last cars following in 2035.

Is the FD2 the same as the European Civic Type R?

No. The European car is the FN2 hatchback with a 201 PS engine. The Japanese FD2 sedan has 225 PS at 8,000 rpm, and Japan also sold the FN2 as the Type R Euro, limited to 2,010 cars for 2009.

Is it right-hand drive?

Yes. Every Japan-market FD2 is right-hand drive. Canada allows right-hand-drive cars over 15 years old, but you still need a provincial safety inspection and, in some provinces, an emissions test before registration.
