About the DC2

The DC2 Integra Type R is widely considered the best-handling front-drive car of its era. It uses the B18C 1.8 L VTEC four with front-wheel drive.

A Japanese-market car gives you the home-market specification rather than the US Acura version. Values have climbed: CLASSIC.com put a typical car at about US$23,500 in September 2026, while a low-mileage 2001 US Acura Integra Type R sold for US$204,204 on Bring a Trailer in July 2025.

Japanese Wikipedia says early DC2 engines had their ports polished by hand, and the standard car left out air conditioning and audio to save weight. The 98 Spec of January 1998 widened the tyres from 195 to 215 mm, moved from 15- to 16-inch wheels and from four to five wheel studs, and added HID headlights. The Type R X arrived in December 1999. Carsensor’s Japanese averages rise with each update, from about ¥3.24 million for 1995–96 cars to about ¥5.0 million for 1999–2001 cars.

Eligibility

Can a DC2 come in?

Both countries count from the month on the build plate, so a car can become eligible part-way through a year. We check the plate on every car.

Canada15-year rule · #17 in our top 25
Every year eligible now

Quebec registers right-hand-drive cars only at 25 years. Every other province follows the federal 15-year rule.

United States25-year rule · #15 in our top 25
Built up to Oct 2001: eligible now. Later builds roll in through 2026

US sourcing is planned for 2027, once a customs broker confirms the duty rate on Japanese classics. Enquiries are welcome now.

Buying one

What to look at on a DC2

The model-specific weak points we look for in the auction sheet, the photos and the scan.

  • Rust

Worth checking the rear wheel arches, quarter panels and sills.

  • Gearbox

Worth feeling for second and third gear synchro wear and crunchy shifts.

  • Engine

Worth checking for oil consumption and leaks from the VTEC solenoid gasket and pressure switch.

  • History

Ask about theft recovery and engine swaps. These cars are frequent targets.

  • Chassis plate

Confirm a genuine Type R chassis number rather than a clone.

Quality control

What we check on every DC2

  • The auction sheet, in full

Every line of the original Japanese sheet translated: repair marks, rust notes, interior score.

  • The build plate

The month of manufacture decides eligibility, so we read it off the car, not the registration.

  • Mileage against the records

Dash and ECU against the auction sheet and Japan's inspection history.

  • Flood and accident history

Checked before export, while a claim is still possible.

  • A full diagnostic scan

Every module read inside the auction's 5-day claim window, so a hidden fault goes back to the seller.

  • Underneath

Chassis rails, floors and suspension, where snow-country salt does its damage.

Questions

DC2 buyer questions

Is the DC2 eligible in both countries?

Yes. Japanese production ran from October 1995 to June 2001, so every DC2 is past both Canada’s 15-year rule and the US 25-year rule as of October 2026.

Which spec is best?

The 98 Spec and later cars have 16-inch wheels, wider tyres, five-stud hubs and HID headlights. Carsensor shows 1999–2001 cars averaging about ¥5.0 million in Japan, against about ¥3.24 million for 1995–96 cars. The four-door DB8 is also a Type R.

Why buy a Japanese car instead of a US Acura?

A Japanese car has the home-market specification, rated at 200 PS. It is right-hand drive. Confirm a genuine Type R chassis number and ask about theft recovery and engine swaps, since these cars are frequent targets.
