About the JCESE / JC3SE

Classic.com dates the Eunos Cosmo JC series to 1990–1996. It is a Japan-only luxury coupe and the only production car with a three-rotor engine, the 20B-REW; a twin-rotor 13B-REW version was also sold.

Values vary widely by engine and mileage. A 1992 20B car with about 14,000 km sold for A$48,000 in Australia in early 2026, the same as a similar car in 2022, while a 1996 car sold for US$10,500 in September 2024.

The Cosmo was the flagship of Mazda’s new Eunos dealer channel and was launched during Japan’s bubble economy. Japanese Wikipedia says the 20B three-rotor was designed for more power but was cut to 280 PS for the domestic limit. The CCS grade had a GPS navigation system developed with Mitsubishi Electric, described as a world first. Heavy fuel use, 6.1 km/L in the official test, hurt sales, and only 8,842 were registered new.

Can a JCESE / JC3SE come in?

Both countries count from the month on the build plate, so a car can become eligible part-way through a year. We check the plate on every car.

US sourcing is planned for 2027, once a customs broker confirms the duty rate on Japanese classics. Enquiries are welcome now.

Buying one

What to look at on a JCESE / JC3SE

The model-specific weak points we look for in the auction sheet, the photos and the scan.

  • Compression

Have every rotor compression-tested. Three-rotor rebuilds are costly and parts are scarce.

  • Sequential turbos

Worth checking that the sequential twin-turbo system works as designed.

  • Electronics

Worth testing the touchscreen and other electronics.

  • Automatic

Worth checking the automatic gearbox for smooth shifts.

  • Fuel and rust

Worth checking for fuel-system leaks, and rust in the sills and arches.

Quality control

What we check on every JCESE / JC3SE

  • The auction sheet, in full

Every line of the original Japanese sheet translated: repair marks, rust notes, interior score.

  • The build plate

The month of manufacture decides eligibility, so we read it off the car, not the registration.

  • Mileage against the records

Dash and ECU against the auction sheet and Japan's inspection history.

  • Flood and accident history

Checked before export, while a claim is still possible.

  • A full diagnostic scan

Every module read inside the auction's 5-day claim window, so a hidden fault goes back to the seller.

  • Underneath

Chassis rails, floors and suspension, where snow-country salt does its damage.

Questions

JCESE / JC3SE buyer questions

Is there a manual Cosmo?

No. Every Eunos Cosmo has a four-speed automatic. Japanese Wikipedia says no clutch was developed to handle the three-rotor’s torque, which Carsensor lists as 41 kgm (about 402 Nm) at 3,000 rpm.

20B or 13B?

The 20B-REW three-rotor makes 280 PS and is the reason most buyers want a Cosmo. The 13B-REW twin-rotor makes 230 PS. Three-rotor rebuilds are costly and parts are scarce, so have every rotor compression-tested before you buy.

Is it eligible, and what does it cost?

Production ended in August 1995, so every Cosmo is eligible in both Canada and the US. Carsensor puts the Japanese average asking price at about ¥3.11 million in October 2026.
