About the CZ4A

The Evo X was released on 1 October 2007 with the 4B11T 2.0 L turbo four and all-wheel drive. From October 2008 it was rated at 300 PS and 422 Nm, and the GSR-Premium was added. The run closed with the Final Edition: 1,000 GSR five-speed cars with 313 PS, delivered from August 2015.

It was the last Evo. Canadian importers are marketing 2011 builds as newly eligible, and it will not reach US eligibility until about 2032.

The Evo X debuted in Super Taikyu in 2008 and won rounds 2 and 3 of its first season. In the All Japan Rally Championship, Fumio Nutahara won two rounds in 2008 and then took the title in an Evo X in 2009 and again in 2015. In Japan the price spread is wide: Carsensor shows ordinary GSRs with high mileage at about ¥2.1–2.5 million, while low-mileage Final Editions are listed at over ¥9 million.

Eligibility

Can a CZ4A come in?

Both countries count from the month on the build plate, so a car can become eligible part-way through a year. We check the plate on every car.

Built up to Oct 2011: eligible now. Later builds roll in through 2030

Quebec registers right-hand-drive cars only at 25 years. Every other province follows the federal 15-year rule.

US sourcing is planned for 2027, once a customs broker confirms the duty rate on Japanese classics. Enquiries are welcome now.

What to look at on a CZ4A

The model-specific weak points we look for in the auction sheet, the photos and the scan.

  • Recall 2499

Frames CZ4A-0000211 to -0200630 had a clutch hydraulic pipe clip recall. Confirm it was done.

  • AWD pump

Check the ACD/AYC pump housing and gasket for corrosion.

  • Fuel pump relay

A failing fuel pump relay causes lean running. Check for hesitation under load.

  • Timing chain

Listen for timing chain stretch noise on start-up.

  • TC-SST gearbox

On twin-clutch cars, check for slipping when cold.

Quality control

What we check on every CZ4A

  • The auction sheet, in full

Every line of the original Japanese sheet translated: repair marks, rust notes, interior score.

  • The build plate

The month of manufacture decides eligibility, so we read it off the car, not the registration.

  • Mileage against the records

Dash and ECU against the auction sheet and Japan's inspection history.

  • Flood and accident history

Checked before export, while a claim is still possible.

  • A full diagnostic scan

Every module read inside the auction's 5-day claim window, so a hidden fault goes back to the seller.

  • Underneath

Chassis rails, floors and suspension, where snow-country salt does its damage.

Questions

CZ4A buyer questions

Can I import an Evo X into Canada now?

Yes, if the car is at least 15 years old by its build month. In October 2026 that means builds up to about October 2011. 2012 builds follow month by month during 2027, and the 2015 Final Edition not until 2030. Confirm the build month on the plate first.

When can the Evo X go to the US?

Not before October 2032, when the first October 2007 builds reach 25 years. The US rule counts from the build month, so later cars follow month by month. Until then a Japanese-market Evo X is a Canada-only import.

Should I buy the TC-SST or the five-speed manual?

In Japan the manual GSR and Final Edition carry the higher prices. The TC-SST is quicker to shift but is the costlier gearbox to repair, so check it for slipping when cold and ask for its service history. The RS and Final Edition are manual only.
