About the Z32

The Z32 Fairlady Z was built in Japan from July 1989 to August 2000, four years longer than the US 300ZX, so late facelift cars never reached North America. The Twin Turbo uses the VG30DETT 3.0 L V6, rated at 280 PS and 388 Nm, with rear-wheel drive. A convertible joined in August 1992.

It offers a 1990s twin-turbo supercar shape for much less than a Supra or NSX.

When it launched in 1989, the Z32 was the first Japanese car with a 280 PS 3.0 L V6 turbo engine, the VG30DETT. From October 1994 Nissan sold Version S grades, and in January 1997 it added the Version R to the 2by2 T-bar roof range. The last twin-turbo 2by2 T-bar cars cost up to ¥4.82 million before tax new.

Can a Z32 come in?

Both countries count from the month on the build plate, so a car can become eligible part-way through a year. We check the plate on every car.

Quebec registers right-hand-drive cars only at 25 years. Every other province follows the federal 15-year rule.

US sourcing is planned for 2027, once a customs broker confirms the duty rate on Japanese classics. Enquiries are welcome now.

What to look at on a Z32

The model-specific weak points we look for in the auction sheet, the photos and the scan.

  • Wiring

Engine-bay heat damages the wiring loom. Check for brittle insulation.

  • Leaks

Check the turbo seals and cam-end seals, and look for coolant leaks.

  • T-top and sills

T-top leaks rot the triple-layer sills from the inside.

  • Automatic

On automatics, check for overheating, delayed engagement or judder.

  • Timing belt

The belt is due about every 100,000 km.

Quality control

What we check on every Z32

  • The auction sheet, in full

Every line of the original Japanese sheet translated: repair marks, rust notes, interior score.

  • The build plate

The month of manufacture decides eligibility, so we read it off the car, not the registration.

  • Mileage against the records

Dash and ECU against the auction sheet and Japan's inspection history.

  • Flood and accident history

Checked before export, while a claim is still possible.

  • A full diagnostic scan

Every module read inside the auction's 5-day claim window, so a hidden fault goes back to the seller.

  • Underneath

Chassis rails, floors and suspension, where snow-country salt does its damage.

Questions

Z32 buyer questions

Is every Z32 eligible?

Yes. Carsensor lists production from July 1989 to August 2000, so the last cars passed the US 25-year rule in August 2025. Every build has also passed Canada's 15-year rule.

Which Z32 should I buy?

The twin turbo is the one to get. Two-seaters are lighter; the 2by2 adds small rear seats. Late Version S and Version R twin turbos were sold only in Japan after 1996, and Carsensor's average for 1998–2000 cars was about ¥3.62 million.

What does a Z32 cost in Japan?

Carsensor's average asking price across all Z32 grades, including non-turbo cars, was about ¥2.89 million in October 2026. Turbo cars and late builds sit higher. Shipping, duty and compliance are extra.
