About the RNN14
The Pulsar GTI-R was built in Japan from August 1990 to January 1995, and it has been legal to import into the US since August 2015. It is a compact turbocharged, all-wheel-drive hatchback from Nissan’s World Rally Championship era.
Few were exported and parts are hard to find, so condition and completeness matter more than mileage. We confirm each car’s build date and specification from its export certificate before quoting.
The GTI-R was built to homologate Nissan's World Rally Championship car, and FIA homologation took effect on 1 March 1991. Its best works result was third overall on the 1992 Swedish Rally, after fifth on the 1991 Safari. Nissan withdrew after two seasons, but privateers took the 1992 Group N title in the Sunny GTI-R. NISMO built 21 complete cars, and one sold for US$88,500 on Bring a Trailer in 2022.

Can an RNN14 come in?
Both countries count from the month on the build plate, so a car can become eligible part-way through a year. We check the plate on every car.
Quebec registers right-hand-drive cars only at 25 years. Every other province follows the federal 15-year rule.
US sourcing is planned for 2027, once a customs broker confirms the duty rate on Japanese classics. Enquiries are welcome now.

What to look at on an RNN14
The model-specific weak points we look for in the auction sheet, the photos and the scan.
Intercooler
Worth checking for heat soak from the top-mounted intercooler on a long drive.
Drivetrain
Worth checking the gearbox and transfer case for wear and noise.
Rally use
Worth checking for signs of hard rally or track use, including seam welding and repaired panels.
Parts
Ask what original parts come with the car; many are hard to find.
Rust
Check the sills, arches and floor.
What we check on every RNN14
The auction sheet, in full
Every line of the original Japanese sheet translated: repair marks, rust notes, interior score.
The build plate
The month of manufacture decides eligibility, so we read it off the car, not the registration.
Mileage against the records
Dash and ECU against the auction sheet and Japan's inspection history.
Flood and accident history
Checked before export, while a claim is still possible.
A full diagnostic scan
Every module read inside the auction's 5-day claim window, so a hidden fault goes back to the seller.
Underneath
Chassis rails, floors and suspension, where snow-country salt does its damage.

RNN14 buyer questions
Is the Pulsar GTI-R eligible?
Yes. ProjectJDM gives production as August 1990 to January 1995, so every car has passed the US 25-year rule and Canada's 15-year rule. The US counts from the manufacture date on the plate.
RA or RB?
The RA is the equipped road car at 1,220 kg. The RB was a stripped base model for competition at about 1,190 kg, and 21 of the RB cars were NISMO complete cars. Ask for documents that show which one you are buying.
What should I budget for repairs?
An RAC review notes that a clutch change is an engine-out job, and that the top-mounted intercooler struggles at higher boost. Check the rear arch extensions for rust and for blue smoke on overrun, a sign of a tired turbo.
