About the HCR32

The HCR32 Skyline GTS-t is the rear-drive turbo version of the R32 Skyline, sold in the same 1989–1994 range as the GT-R. Its RB20DET 2.0 L turbo inline-six is rated at 215 PS.

It gives you the R32 body and a turbo RB engine for far less than a GT-R. JDMBuySell’s median for all R32 Skylines, GT-R and GTS-t combined, was US$24,950 in October 2026, which suggests the GTS-t sits well below the GT-R.

The non-GT-R R32 range ran from May 1989 to July 1993. The turbo line started as the GTS-t and the better-equipped GTS-t Type M; after the August 1991 update only the Type M remained, priced new at ¥2.611–2.708 million before tax. Its 215 PS RB20DET came from the same RB engine family as the GT-R, in a lighter rear-drive car.

Can an HCR32 come in?

Both countries count from the month on the build plate, so a car can become eligible part-way through a year. We check the plate on every car.

Canada15-year rule
Every year eligible now

Quebec registers right-hand-drive cars only at 25 years. Every other province follows the federal 15-year rule.

US sourcing is planned for 2027, once a customs broker confirms the duty rate on Japanese classics. Enquiries are welcome now.

What to look at on an HCR32

The model-specific weak points we look for in the auction sheet, the photos and the scan.

  • Rust

Worth checking the strut towers, rear arches, sills and boot floor, the same weak spots as the R32 GT-R.

  • Chassis code

Confirm HCR32 on the plate. GT-R body parts on a GTS-t are common.

  • Timing belt

The RB20 is belt-driven. Ask when the belt was last changed.

  • Turbo

Check for smoke on start-up and under boost, and ask what boost it has run.

  • Modifications

Ask for invoices for any engine or gearbox work.

Quality control

What we check on every HCR32

  • The auction sheet, in full

Every line of the original Japanese sheet translated: repair marks, rust notes, interior score.

  • The build plate

The month of manufacture decides eligibility, so we read it off the car, not the registration.

  • Mileage against the records

Dash and ECU against the auction sheet and Japan's inspection history.

  • Flood and accident history

Checked before export, while a claim is still possible.

  • A full diagnostic scan

Every module read inside the auction's 5-day claim window, so a hidden fault goes back to the seller.

  • Underneath

Chassis rails, floors and suspension, where snow-country salt does its damage.

Questions

HCR32 buyer questions

Is the HCR32 GTS-t eligible?

Yes. Carsensor lists non-GT-R R32 production from May 1989 to July 1993, so every car has passed the US 25-year rule and Canada's 15-year rule.

GTS-t or GTS-t Type M?

Both use the 215 PS RB20DET turbo. The Type M was the better-equipped grade and, after August 1991, the only GTS-t sold. Carsensor's Type M spec sheet, at 1,340 kg, is for a four-door, so confirm the body you are buying.

What does a GTS-t cost in Japan?

Carsensor's average for all non-GT-R R32 Skylines was about ¥3.13 million in October 2026. GTS-t Type M listings ran from about ¥2.69 million at 172,000 km to about ¥3.98 million at 32,000 km. Shipping and compliance are extra.
