About the ECR33

The R33 Skyline range was introduced in August 1993 and replaced in May 1998. The ECR33 GTS25t uses the RB25DET 2.5 L turbo inline-six with rear-wheel drive, rated at 250 PS at launch; a 1997 Type M is listed at 245 PS, so confirm the figure for each car.

It is the rear-drive turbo alternative to the R33 GT-R, with similar looks for far less money. JDMBuySell’s median for all R33s, GT-R included, was US$28,499 in October 2026.

Carsensor dates the non-GT-R R33 range from August 1993 to April 1998. The GTS25t turbo line went through several versions: the Type M from launch, a Type G in 1995, then Type M Spec I, Spec II and Type II grades in 1996, priced new at ¥2.84–3.17 million before tax. All share the RB25DET 2.5 L turbo six and rear-wheel drive.

Eligibility

Can an ECR33 come in?

Both countries count from the month on the build plate, so a car can become eligible part-way through a year. We check the plate on every car.

Canada15-year rule
Every year eligible now

Quebec registers right-hand-drive cars only at 25 years. Every other province follows the federal 15-year rule.

United States25-year rule
Every year eligible now

US sourcing is planned for 2027, once a customs broker confirms the duty rate on Japanese classics. Enquiries are welcome now.

What to look at on an ECR33

The model-specific weak points we look for in the auction sheet, the photos and the scan.

  • Suspension turrets

Worth checking for bulging turrets, which corrode from the inside on R33 shells.

  • Boot

Check for a damp boot floor from tired seals.

  • Engine noise

Worth listening for a rattle from the variable cam timing on start-up.

  • Dashboard

Worth checking for a cracked dash.

  • Chassis code

Confirm ECR33 on the plate. GT-R bodywork on a GTS25t is common.

Quality control

What we check on every ECR33

  • The auction sheet, in full

Every line of the original Japanese sheet translated: repair marks, rust notes, interior score.

  • The build plate

The month of manufacture decides eligibility, so we read it off the car, not the registration.

  • Mileage against the records

Dash and ECU against the auction sheet and Japan's inspection history.

  • Flood and accident history

Checked before export, while a claim is still possible.

  • A full diagnostic scan

Every module read inside the auction's 5-day claim window, so a hidden fault goes back to the seller.

  • Underneath

Chassis rails, floors and suspension, where snow-country salt does its damage.

Questions

ECR33 buyer questions

Is the ECR33 GTS25t eligible?

Yes. Carsensor lists the non-GT-R R33 Skyline from August 1993 to April 1998, so every car has passed the US 25-year rule and Canada's 15-year rule.

Which GTS25t grade should I choose?

The Type M is the sporty grade and the most common. In 1996 Nissan split it into Spec I, Spec II and Type II versions with different equipment. Confirm the grade from the export certificate, since GT-R bodywork is often added.

What does a GTS25t cost in Japan?

Carsensor's average for all non-GT-R R33 Skylines was about ¥3.06 million in October 2026, including non-turbo cars. A 36,000 km GTS25t Type M asked about ¥4.5 million. Shipping, duty and compliance are extra.
