About the WGNC34

The Stagea 260RS is an Autech conversion of the Stagea wagon with the R33 GT-R’s RB26DETT twin-turbo inline-six, rated at 280 PS and 368 Nm, and ATTESA all-wheel drive. Nissan dates its launch to November 1997 and Motor-Fan to October 1997; ProjectJDM gives a run of October 1997 to September 2001.

It offers a GT-R drivetrain in a practical body for far less than a GT-R. The widely repeated figure of 1,734 built is unconfirmed.

Motor-Fan notes that the Stagea reused chassis and engine parts from the R33 Skyline and C34 Laurel, which made a GT-R drivetrain a natural fit. Autech's 260RS added Brembo brakes and torque-split four-wheel drive, and the 1998 brochure lists a rear mechanical limited-slip differential. The 1998 revision changed the base code from E-WGNC34 to GF-WGNC34.

Can a WGNC34 come in?

Both countries count from the month on the build plate, so a car can become eligible part-way through a year. We check the plate on every car.

Canada15-year rule · #23 in our top 25
Every year eligible now

Quebec registers right-hand-drive cars only at 25 years. Every other province follows the federal 15-year rule.

United States25-year rule · #21 in our top 25
Built up to Oct 2001: eligible now. Later builds roll in through 2026

US sourcing is planned for 2027, once a customs broker confirms the duty rate on Japanese classics. Enquiries are welcome now.

What to look at on a WGNC34

The model-specific weak points we look for in the auction sheet, the photos and the scan.

  • Rust

Check under the door mirrors, the door hinges, the spare-wheel well and the strut towers.

  • Rough idle

A rough idle can come from coil packs, vacuum hoses or the turbos.

  • Wear

Expect heavy wear on bushings and brakes on a heavy car. Budget for both.

  • Gearbox

Feel for crunching between gears on the test drive.

  • Fakes

Require Autech documentation and confirm the WGNC34 base. RB25 Stageas are sometimes passed off as 260RS.

Quality control

What we check on every WGNC34

  • The auction sheet, in full

Every line of the original Japanese sheet translated: repair marks, rust notes, interior score.

  • The build plate

The month of manufacture decides eligibility, so we read it off the car, not the registration.

  • Mileage against the records

Dash and ECU against the auction sheet and Japan's inspection history.

  • Flood and accident history

Checked before export, while a claim is still possible.

  • A full diagnostic scan

Every module read inside the auction's 5-day claim window, so a hidden fault goes back to the seller.

  • Underneath

Chassis rails, floors and suspension, where snow-country salt does its damage.

Questions

WGNC34 buyer questions

Is the Stagea 260RS eligible?

Yes. Carsensor lists the 260RS from August 1997, and the WC34 generation ended in September 2001, so every car has passed both the US 25-year rule and Canada's 15-year rule. Check the plate's build month.

How do I spot a fake 260RS?

Confirm the WGNC34 code and the RB26DETT engine, and ask for Autech documentation. RB25-engined Stageas with 260RS badges exist. A real car has a five-speed manual and is listed at 1,720 kg.

What does a 260RS cost in Japan?

Carsensor showed two 260RS listings in October 2026, at about ¥4.97 million and ¥6.73 million total. Few cars are for sale at any time, so expect to wait for a good one and add freight and compliance costs.
