About the GRB / GVB
The GRB hatchback and GVB sedan are the third-generation Impreza WRX STI, with the EJ207 2.0 L turbo flat-four and all-wheel drive. Canadian importers are marketing 2011 builds as newly eligible in 2026, and the car will not be US-eligible for years.
Detailed production dates and specifications for the Japanese-market cars were not verified in our research, so we confirm each car’s build date and grade from its export certificate before quoting.
Subaru Tecnica International raced the five-door GRB at the Nürburgring 24 Hours, then switched to the GVB four-door sedan to take on its European rivals. In June 2011 the GVB, driven by Toshihiro Yoshida, Kota Sasaki, Marcel Engels and Carlo van Dam, won the SP3T class and finished 21st overall. STI repeated as SP3T class winner in 2012.

Can a GRB / GVB come in?
Both countries count from the month on the build plate, so a car can become eligible part-way through a year. We check the plate on every car.
Quebec registers right-hand-drive cars only at 25 years. Every other province follows the federal 15-year rule.
US sourcing is planned for 2027, once a customs broker confirms the duty rate on Japanese classics. Enquiries are welcome now.

What to look at on a GRB / GVB
The model-specific weak points we look for in the auction sheet, the photos and the scan.
Engine health
A compression or leak-down test is worth doing on any EJ-series turbo engine.
Turbo
Check for smoke on start-up and under boost.
Timing belt
The EJ20 is belt-driven. Ask when the belt was last changed.
Modifications
Many STIs are tuned. Ask for the tuning history and confirm the engine is original.
Tires
All-wheel drive needs four matching tires.
What we check on every GRB / GVB
The auction sheet, in full
Every line of the original Japanese sheet translated: repair marks, rust notes, interior score.
The build plate
The month of manufacture decides eligibility, so we read it off the car, not the registration.
Mileage against the records
Dash and ECU against the auction sheet and Japan's inspection history.
Flood and accident history
Checked before export, while a claim is still possible.
A full diagnostic scan
Every module read inside the auction's 5-day claim window, so a hidden fault goes back to the seller.
Underneath
Chassis rails, floors and suspension, where snow-country salt does its damage.

GRB / GVB buyer questions
Is a GRB or GVB eligible for Canada?
Cars at least 15 years old by build month are. In October 2026 that covers GRB hatchbacks built up to October 2011 and the earliest GVB sedans, built from July 2010. 2012 builds follow during 2027. Check the build month on the plate.
Can it go to the US?
Not yet. The first GRBs were built in October 2007, so they reach 25 years in October 2032. GVB sedans follow from 2035. Until then this generation is a Canada-only import from Japan.
Why buy a JDM car over a North American STI?
The Japanese car uses the 2.0 L EJ20 rated at 308 PS, not the 2.5 L engine of the North American STI. Prices in Japan are moderate, with Carsensor averages near ¥1.8–1.9 million, but many cars are modified, so check engine health first.
