About the HA21S / HA22S

The fourth-generation Alto Works was built from November 1994 to September 1998, and the fifth generation from October 1998 until the Works name was dropped in December 2000. The RS/Z uses the K6A twin-cam turbo three with 64 PS and four-wheel disc brakes; the ie/s uses the single-cam F6A turbo.

It is a light kei hot hatch. The Works R of May 1995 was the competition model.

The May 1995 Works R was the competition version of the RS/Z. It had forged pistons, high-lift cams, a larger throttle, 260 cc injectors, its own ECU, an HT06 turbo and a bigger intercooler. Catalogue power stayed at the 64 PS kei limit, but torque rose to 11.0 kgm. The Works R was dropped with the October 1998 model, and all turbo Altos, Works included, ended in 2000.

Eligibility

Can an HA21S / HA22S come in?

Both countries count from the month on the build plate, so a car can become eligible part-way through a year. We check the plate on every car.

Canada15-year rule
Every year eligible now

Quebec registers right-hand-drive cars only at 25 years. Every other province follows the federal 15-year rule.

United States25-year rule
Every year eligible now

US sourcing is planned for 2027, once a customs broker confirms the duty rate on Japanese classics. Enquiries are welcome now.

Buying one

What to look at on an HA21S / HA22S

The model-specific weak points we look for in the auction sheet, the photos and the scan.

  • Rust

Worth checking the sills and rear arches.

  • Timing chain

On K6A engines, worth listening for timing chain noise.

  • Boost

Worth checking the turbo and hoses for boost leaks.

  • Four-wheel drive

On four-wheel-drive cars, worth checking the viscous coupling and transfer case.

  • Modifications

Ask about any boost increase or engine work.

Quality control

What we check on every HA21S / HA22S

  • The auction sheet, in full

Every line of the original Japanese sheet translated: repair marks, rust notes, interior score.

  • The build plate

The month of manufacture decides eligibility, so we read it off the car, not the registration.

  • Mileage against the records

Dash and ECU against the auction sheet and Japan's inspection history.

  • Flood and accident history

Checked before export, while a claim is still possible.

  • A full diagnostic scan

Every module read inside the auction's 5-day claim window, so a hidden fault goes back to the seller.

  • Underneath

Chassis rails, floors and suspension, where snow-country salt does its damage.

Questions

HA21S / HA22S buyer questions

Is the Alto Works eligible?

Yes. These generations were built from November 1994 to December 2000, so every car is more than 25 years old and eligible in both the US and Canada. Some provinces and states restrict kei cars, so check local rules.

Which version should I buy?

The 1994–1998 RS/Z with the K6A twin-cam turbo and four-wheel discs is the usual choice. The Works R is the rare competition model. The 1998–2000 cars have variable valve timing and drive-by-wire throttle and cost less in Japan.

Are parts available?

The Alto Works was never sold in North America, so parts come from Japan. The K6A engine was used widely in Suzuki kei cars, which helps with engine parts, but trim and body panels are harder to find.
