About the EA11R / EA21R

The Cappuccino went on sale in November 1991, and production ended in January 1998. It is a front-engined, rear-drive kei roadster with a three-way removable roof. The EA11R uses the F6A 657 cc turbo three, and the EA21R, from May 1995, the K6A 658 cc turbo three; both are rated at 64 PS.

Of 26,583 built, only 4,323 were EA21Rs, which makes the later car the rarer one.

The Cappuccino began as a reference exhibit at the 1989 Tokyo Motor Show, with a 550 cc engine. Suzuki’s president, Osamu Suzuki, then announced it would be built, and it went on sale in November 1991. Its longitudinal engine can take the engine and gearbox of the same-era Suzuki Jimny, which made it a popular tuning base, and some are used for drifting despite the short wheelbase.

What to look at on an EA11R / EA21R

The model-specific weak points we look for in the auction sheet, the photos and the scan.

  • Roof seals

Worth checking the roof and rear-screen seals; leaks into the footwells lead to floor and sill rust.

  • Rust

Worth checking the rear subframe and arches.

  • Engine

Worth checking for head-gasket trouble and turbo wear.

  • Roof panels

Worth checking the aluminium roof panels for dents.

  • Driveline

Worth checking the clutch and differential.

Quality control

What we check on every EA11R / EA21R

  • The auction sheet, in full

Every line of the original Japanese sheet translated: repair marks, rust notes, interior score.

  • The build plate

The month of manufacture decides eligibility, so we read it off the car, not the registration.

  • Mileage against the records

Dash and ECU against the auction sheet and Japan's inspection history.

  • Flood and accident history

Checked before export, while a claim is still possible.

  • A full diagnostic scan

Every module read inside the auction's 5-day claim window, so a hidden fault goes back to the seller.

  • Underneath

Chassis rails, floors and suspension, where snow-country salt does its damage.

Questions

EA11R / EA21R buyer questions

Is the Cappuccino eligible?

Yes. Production ended in January 1998, so every Cappuccino is more than 25 years old and eligible in both the US and Canada. Some provinces and states restrict kei cars on certain roads, so check local rules first.

EA11R or EA21R?

The later EA21R has the K6A engine with more torque, 10.5 kgm against 8.7 kgm, and is 10 kg lighter. Only 4,323 were built, so it is rarer. The EA11R is more common and easier to find.

Is it practical to own here?

It is right-hand drive, small and light at about 700 kg. Engine and service parts come from Japan, and roof seals need care, because leaks lead to floor and sill rust. Check those areas before buying.
