About the ST205

The ST205 Celica GT-Four launched in February 1994, and production ended in August 1999, when the next Celica dropped the GT-Four. Its 3S-GTE 2.0 L turbo four is rated at 255 PS and drives all four wheels. A WRC edition was offered, with 2,100 for Japan.

It was the last of Toyota’s homologation-era rally Celicas, a turbo all-wheel-drive coupe built on the same engine family as the MR2 GT.

The ST205 was the last rally Celica, and its works career ended in scandal. After the car’s only World Rally Championship win, Toyota Team Europe was banned for 12 months over an illegal turbo air restrictor. When the team returned, it used the Corolla World Rally Car instead, though regional and private teams kept running ST205s. Toyota Team Europe’s influence showed in the road car’s aluminium bonnet, four-channel ABS and Super Strut suspension.

Eligibility

Can an ST205 come in?

Both countries count from the month on the build plate, so a car can become eligible part-way through a year. We check the plate on every car.

Canada15-year rule
Every year eligible now

Quebec registers right-hand-drive cars only at 25 years. Every other province follows the federal 15-year rule.

US sourcing is planned for 2027, once a customs broker confirms the duty rate on Japanese classics. Enquiries are welcome now.

What to look at on an ST205

The model-specific weak points we look for in the auction sheet, the photos and the scan.

  • Drivetrain

Worth checking the transfer case and the clutch.

  • Parts

Worth confirming body parts such as bumpers and the intercooler are present and undamaged; replacements are scarce.

  • Turbo

Worth checking the ceramic CT26 turbo for smoke and shaft play.

  • Intercooler

On WRC editions, worth checking the water-to-air intercooler system.

  • Rust

Worth checking the rear arches and strut tops.

Quality control

What we check on every ST205

  • The auction sheet, in full

Every line of the original Japanese sheet translated: repair marks, rust notes, interior score.

  • The build plate

The month of manufacture decides eligibility, so we read it off the car, not the registration.

  • Mileage against the records

Dash and ECU against the auction sheet and Japan's inspection history.

  • Flood and accident history

Checked before export, while a claim is still possible.

  • A full diagnostic scan

Every module read inside the auction's 5-day claim window, so a hidden fault goes back to the seller.

  • Underneath

Chassis rails, floors and suspension, where snow-country salt does its damage.

Questions

ST205 buyer questions

Is every ST205 GT-Four eligible?

Yes. Production ran from February 1994 to August 1999, so every car is more than 25 years old and clears the US rule, and all of them clear Canada’s 15-year rule.

Is the WRC edition worth the extra?

Toyota priced the WRC edition ¥100,000 above the standard GT-Four, with the same 255 PS and 1,380 kg in the catalogue. It is the homologation version, with 2,100 sold in Japan, so it carries a premium today. Confirm it from the grade code.

How hard is it to find parts?

The 3S-GTE engine is shared with the MR2 GT, which helps with engine parts. GT-Four-specific body panels, bumpers and drivetrain parts are scarce, so buy a complete car with its original parts.
