About the AE101

The AE101 Levin and Trueno were built from June 1991 to 1995, with an update in May 1993. Like the AE92 before it, it is front-wheel drive. The GT-APEX uses the 4A-GE 20-valve “silver top” four with intake variable valve timing, rated at 160 PS at 7,400 rpm. The GT-Z has the supercharged 4A-GZE, rated at 170 PS, with a viscous limited-slip differential.

The 20-valve engine is a swap favourite, and the car itself is undervalued.

On track the AE101 had a hard time. Japanese Wikipedia says the 20-valve 4A-GE could match Honda’s VTEC engines for power, but the car struggled with tyres and its Super Strut suspension took time to develop. Touring car racing in Japan ended with the Civic still on top. The electronically controlled Super Strut suspension was standard on the supercharged GT-Z and optional on the GT-APEX.

Eligibility

Can an AE101 come in?

Both countries count from the month on the build plate, so a car can become eligible part-way through a year. We check the plate on every car.

Canada15-year rule
Every year eligible now

Quebec registers right-hand-drive cars only at 25 years. Every other province follows the federal 15-year rule.

United States25-year rule
Every year eligible now

US sourcing is planned for 2027, once a customs broker confirms the duty rate on Japanese classics. Enquiries are welcome now.

Buying one

What to look at on an AE101

The model-specific weak points we look for in the auction sheet, the photos and the scan.

  • Valve timing

Worth checking the 20-valve engine’s oil-control valve and oil consumption.

  • Rust

Worth checking the sills and arches.

  • Supercharger

On a GT-Z, worth listening for supercharger noise.

  • Engine swaps

Confirm the engine is original; 20-valve engines are often removed for swaps.

Quality control

What we check on every AE101

  • The auction sheet, in full

Every line of the original Japanese sheet translated: repair marks, rust notes, interior score.

  • The build plate

The month of manufacture decides eligibility, so we read it off the car, not the registration.

  • Mileage against the records

Dash and ECU against the auction sheet and Japan's inspection history.

  • Flood and accident history

Checked before export, while a claim is still possible.

  • A full diagnostic scan

Every module read inside the auction's 5-day claim window, so a hidden fault goes back to the seller.

  • Underneath

Chassis rails, floors and suspension, where snow-country salt does its damage.

What landing one costs: see the worked examples; an enquiry gets you the figure for this car. New to auction sheets? Read how to read one.

Questions

AE101 buyer questions

Is every AE101 eligible?

Yes. Production ran from June 1991 to 1995, so every car is more than 25 years old and clears the US rule, and all of them clear Canada’s 15-year rule.

GT-APEX or GT-Z?

The GT-APEX has the 160 PS 20-valve 4A-GE and weighs 1,090 kg. The GT-Z has the supercharged 4A-GZE with 170 PS and more torque (21.0 kgm), at 1,150 kg. The GT-APEX revs higher; the GT-Z pulls harder at low rpm.

How rare are they for sale?

Rare. In October 2026 Carsensor listed only six Levins and two Truenos of this generation in all grades. Expect to buy through Japanese auctions, and confirm the engine is original, since 20-valve engines are often removed for swaps.
