About the AE111

The AE111 Levin and Trueno were built from June 1995 to August 2000, the end of the line. Their 4A-GE 20-valve “black top” four is rated at 165 PS at 7,800 rpm, the highest of any 4A-GE, with front-wheel drive. In April 1997 the Super Strut BZ-G became the BZ-R and gained a six-speed manual.

It is the last and most powerful Levin and Trueno, and a light, high-revving front-drive coupe.

The April 1997 facelift created the BZ-R, the final form of the Levin and Trueno. It came with a six-speed manual, a limited-slip differential, larger front brake rotors with improved calipers, a taller rear spoiler and Super Strut suspension. The same update brought Toyota’s GOA safety body. The AE111 was used widely in Japanese rallying, from national championship level down to amateur events, and in N1 endurance racing.

Eligibility

Can an AE111 come in?

Both countries count from the month on the build plate, so a car can become eligible part-way through a year. We check the plate on every car.

Canada15-year rule
Every year eligible now

Quebec registers right-hand-drive cars only at 25 years. Every other province follows the federal 15-year rule.

United States25-year rule
Every year eligible now

US sourcing is planned for 2027, once a customs broker confirms the duty rate on Japanese classics. Enquiries are welcome now.

What to look at on an AE111

The model-specific weak points we look for in the auction sheet, the photos and the scan.

  • Gearbox

    Worth checking the six-speed synchros.

  • Suspension

Worth checking the Super Strut bushes.

  • Rust

Worth checking the sills and arches.

  • Engine

Worth asking whether the engine has been run hard on the rev limiter, and checking oil consumption.

Quality control

What we check on every AE111

  • The auction sheet, in full

Every line of the original Japanese sheet translated: repair marks, rust notes, interior score.

  • The build plate

The month of manufacture decides eligibility, so we read it off the car, not the registration.

  • Mileage against the records

Dash and ECU against the auction sheet and Japan's inspection history.

  • Flood and accident history

Checked before export, while a claim is still possible.

  • A full diagnostic scan

Every module read inside the auction's 5-day claim window, so a hidden fault goes back to the seller.

  • Underneath

Chassis rails, floors and suspension, where snow-country salt does its damage.

Questions

AE111 buyer questions

Is every AE111 eligible?

Yes. Production ran from May 1995 to 2000, so every car is more than 25 years old and clears the US rule, and all of them clear Canada’s 15-year rule.

Which grade should I buy?

The BZ-R from April 1997 is the one to find. It has the six-speed manual, limited-slip differential, bigger front brakes and Super Strut suspension as standard. Earlier BZ-Gs have the same 165 PS engine but a five-speed manual.

Is it right-hand drive?

Yes. The Levin and Trueno were sold in Japan, so every AE111 is right-hand drive. Carsensor listed only 11 of this generation across both names in October 2026, so most cars come through Japanese auctions.
