About the AE86

The AE86 Corolla Levin and Sprinter Trueno belong to the 1983–1987 Corolla generation and launched in May 1983. They use the 4A-GEU 1.6 L 16-valve four, rated at 130 PS gross (about 110.5 PS net), with rear-wheel drive.

Initial D and early drifting made it an icon, and prices are now far above what the hardware alone would justify. The AE85 is a 1.5 L version, so check the model code.

The AE86 won on track long before Initial D. Kaoru Hoshino won the 1985 Division 1 class of the All Japan Touring Car Championship in a Levin, and Chris Hodgetts won the British Touring Car Championship outright in 1986 and 1987. Keiichi Tsuchiya’s drifting while winning all six rounds of the 1984 Fuji Freshman series earned him the “Drift King” name. Initial D, from 1995, made the three-door Trueno the most wanted version.

Can an AE86 come in?

Both countries count from the month on the build plate, so a car can become eligible part-way through a year. We check the plate on every car.

Canada15-year rule
Every year eligible now

Quebec registers right-hand-drive cars only at 25 years. Every other province follows the federal 15-year rule.

United States25-year rule
Every year eligible now

US sourcing is planned for 2027, once a customs broker confirms the duty rate on Japanese classics. Enquiries are welcome now.

What to look at on an AE86

The model-specific weak points we look for in the auction sheet, the photos and the scan.

  • Rust

Worth checking the strut towers, rear quarters and floors.

  • Engine

Worth confirming the 4A-GEU is original rather than a swap.

  • Gearbox

Worth checking the T50 gearbox for worn synchros.

  • AE85 conversions

Check the plate says AE86. Lesser AE85s are dressed up as AE86s.

  • Drift history

Worth checking for heavily drifted shells and repaired rails.

Quality control

What we check on every AE86

  • The auction sheet, in full

Every line of the original Japanese sheet translated: repair marks, rust notes, interior score.

  • The build plate

The month of manufacture decides eligibility, so we read it off the car, not the registration.

  • Mileage against the records

Dash and ECU against the auction sheet and Japan's inspection history.

  • Flood and accident history

Checked before export, while a claim is still possible.

  • A full diagnostic scan

Every module read inside the auction's 5-day claim window, so a hidden fault goes back to the seller.

  • Underneath

Chassis rails, floors and suspension, where snow-country salt does its damage.

Questions

AE86 buyer questions

Is every AE86 eligible for import?

Yes. The AE86 was built from May 1983 to 1987, so every car is far beyond both the US 25-year rule and Canada’s 15-year rule. Check the plate, as the build month still decides it.

Why are AE86 prices so high?

Demand from Initial D and drifting culture, not the hardware. Carsensor’s October 2026 averages were about ¥4.1 million for the Levin and ¥4.4 million for the Trueno for the 1983–1987 generation.

Levin or Trueno?

Mechanically they are the same GT-APEX with the 4A-GEU. The Trueno has pop-up headlights and the Levin fixed ones. The three-door Trueno, the Initial D car, usually costs the most. Whichever you choose, confirm the plate says AE86, not AE85.
