About the JZA70
The A70 Supra was sold from February 1986 to April 1993. The JZA70 2.5GT Twin Turbo arrived in August 1990 with the 1JZ-GTE 2.5 L twin-turbo inline-six, rated at 280 PS, with rear-wheel drive and a five-speed manual or an automatic. This 2.5 L version was never exported.
It was the first Supra with the 1JZ, giving 1JZ tuning potential in a cheaper, more analogue body than the A80.
The A70 raced in Group A through the 3.0GT Turbo A homologation car, a 500-unit run. TOM’S won on the Supra’s Japanese Touring Car Championship debut in 1987, but the car struggled once the Skyline GT-R arrived in 1989, and Toyota moved to the Corolla Levin in 1991. In Australia, Fitzgerald Racing won the first Bathurst 12 Hour in March 1991 in a Supra.

Can a JZA70 come in?
Both countries count from the month on the build plate, so a car can become eligible part-way through a year. We check the plate on every car.
Quebec registers right-hand-drive cars only at 25 years. Every other province follows the federal 15-year rule.
US sourcing is planned for 2027, once a customs broker confirms the duty rate on Japanese classics. Enquiries are welcome now.

What to look at on a JZA70
The model-specific weak points we look for in the auction sheet, the photos and the scan.
Rust
Worth checking the rear arches, sills and targa drain areas.
Turbos
Worth checking the early ceramic turbine wheels, which can shed at high boost.
Gearbox
Worth checking the R154 synchros.
Electrics
Worth testing the adjustable dampers and the pop-up headlight motors.
Interior
Worth checking the dash and interior plastics for cracks.
What we check on every JZA70
The auction sheet, in full
Every line of the original Japanese sheet translated: repair marks, rust notes, interior score.
The build plate
The month of manufacture decides eligibility, so we read it off the car, not the registration.
Mileage against the records
Dash and ECU against the auction sheet and Japan's inspection history.
Flood and accident history
Checked before export, while a claim is still possible.
A full diagnostic scan
Every module read inside the auction's 5-day claim window, so a hidden fault goes back to the seller.
Underneath
Chassis rails, floors and suspension, where snow-country salt does its damage.

JZA70 buyer questions
Is the JZA70 eligible for import?
Yes. The 2.5GT Twin Turbo was built from August 1990 to 1993, so every car is more than 25 years old and clears the US rule, and all of them clear Canada’s 15-year rule.
What is the Twin Turbo R?
It is the sportier version of the 2.5GT Twin Turbo. Toyota’s 1990 catalogue lists it at 1,520 kg with a five-speed manual, 30 kg lighter than the standard 2.5GT Twin Turbo, and at ¥3,274,000 against ¥3,055,000 new.
Are A70 parts available in North America?
Many body and chassis parts are shared with the A70 Supra sold new in North America, which used the 3.0 L 7M-GTE. The 1JZ-GTE engine was never sold there, but it has wide aftermarket support.
